| Service | How it works | Fare data | Watch out |
|---|
| Yellow Taxi | Metered street-hail, mostly Manhattan | Full: meter fare, tip, tolls, surcharges | Tips only captured on credit card |
| Green Taxi | Street-hail in outer boroughs + upper Manhattan | Full (same as yellow) | Much lower volume; has street-hail vs dispatch flag |
| Rideshare | App-dispatched (Uber ~75%, Lyft ~25%) | Both sides: passenger fare + driver pay | 1.5B rows — always filter on FILE_YEAR_MONTH |
| Car Service | Base-dispatched livery and black car | None — trip counts and locations only | No fare or payment info at all |
Table details
Yellow taxis — TLC_YELLOW_TRIPS
~298M rows, Jan 2019 through Nov 2025. Metered yellow cab trips with full fare breakdowns (meter fare, tips, tolls, surcharges), trip distance, passenger count, and payment type. Tips are only captured on credit card payments.
Green taxis — TLC_GREEN_TRIPS
~12M rows, Jan 2019 through Dec 2025. Boro taxis authorized for street-hail in outer boroughs and upper Manhattan. Same fare structure as yellow taxis, with an additional flag distinguishing street-hail from dispatch trips.
Rideshare — TLC_FHVHV_TRIPS
~1.5B rows, Feb 2019 through Jan 2026. Every Uber and Lyft trip. Includes both what the passenger paid and what the driver received, so you can analyze platform take rates. Also includes pooled ride flags, wheelchair accessibility data, and timestamps for request, arrival, pickup, and dropoff.
Car service — TLC_FHV_TRIPS
~407M rows, Jan 2018 through Dec 2025. Traditional livery and black car trips. No fare data — trip counts and locations only.
Zone lookup — TAXI_ZONE_LOOKUP
265 rows, static. Maps zone IDs to borough, neighborhood, and service zone (Yellow Zone, Boro Zone, Airports, EWR).
Useful analyses
- Platform take rate: How much does Uber/Lyft keep per trip vs what the driver receives?
- Tip patterns: Average tip rate on credit card taxi trips, and how it varies by trip length or time of day.
- Revenue per mile: How do fares compare across services and boroughs?
- Congestion pricing impact: Compare trip volumes and fares before/after the January 2025 CBD fee launch.
- Market share: Trip counts across all four services over time.

Good to know
| Note | Detail |
|---|
| Cash tips invisible | Taxi tip data only covers credit card payments. Cash tips aren’t recorded. |
| Rideshare is huge | 1.5B+ rows. Always filter on FILE_YEAR_MONTH or queries will be slow. |
| Car service = no fares | TLC_FHV_TRIPS has trip counts and locations only. |
| CBD fee is new | Manhattan congestion pricing started January 2025. CBD_CONGESTION_FEE only exists from that month onward. |
| COVID gap | Trip volumes cratered in 2020. Watch out for year-over-year comparisons spanning 2019-2021. |
